Evelyn, John

(1620–1706)
   Historian and Theologian.
Evelyn was a native of Surrey and was educated at the University of Oxford. During the English Civil War, he served in the Royalist army and then lived first abroad and then in retirement during the Commonwealth period until the restoration of King Charles II. He held several important appointments in the 1660s and 1670s and was a cofounder of the Royal Society. However, he is chiefly remembered for his diary, which is an important source for the social and religious history of his time. Although he did not approve of the lasciviousness of the court, he remained loyal to the crown and to the Church of England. He was also the author of several religious works, including treatises against the Jesuits, a history of religion and translations of works of John chrysostom.
